What goes into your California mortgage payment?
The monthly principal-and-interest amount is only one part of the cost of owning a home. To estimate a more complete housing budget, include property taxes, homeowners insurance, homeowners association dues, and mortgage insurance when applicable. Depending on the loan and your escrow arrangement, some expenses may be paid to the loan servicer and others paid separately.
Our payment calculator lets you enter an assumed interest rate, property-tax percentage, and monthly insurance, HOA, and mortgage-insurance amounts. Its tax calculation is an estimate based on the purchase price you enter—not a property-specific assessment from a county tax assessor. A zero-dollar mortgage-insurance or HOA entry means you have not included that cost; it does not establish that the cost will be zero.
Before choosing a price range, compare several scenarios and leave room for maintenance, utilities, and unexpected expenses. Calculator results are planning estimates, not a loan approval or offered interest rate.
